Article #17: Infographic: Instructional Design vs. LXD - By NovoEd
How long it took to read? - 3 mins
Who is this for? - Those that are curious about LXD and perhaps want to take a course on it.
What I took from this article - A couple months ago I attended the free NovoEd training on Learning Experience Design: From Ideas to Impact, and it was terrific! I met some wonderful people, got to practice designing an entire project blueprint, and even record my elevator pitch on camera. I'm grateful for the experience and recommend it to anyone who might consider attending.
Now, with that said, I feel like this infographic is incredibly bias and a bit judgmental. Instructional design is not the same field it was 15 years ago where a company just throws Powerpoint slides at new hires and pushes a test at the end. Thanks to the work of those like Cathy Moore, the ID agendas have been pushed to focus on measurable company goals. A competent ID will know that E-Learning is not always the answer and will be able to offer cost effective alternatives when they might be better suited for achieving the goal.
And that's another thing: Budget. LXD according to this infographic is Expensive! Workplace simulations, hands on discussions, and role-play are incredible learning tools, but they take a lot of time, effort, and money to manage. These options may not be in the cards for a smaller company looking to solve a specific problem. Perhaps this is the Freelancer in me speaking, but not all goals require a giant team and loaded LMS to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes, you just need a slight tweak on what's already working.
