L&D Article Review #23

I've heard a lot lately about the pseudo-science pyramids of learning 🔼 This is fantastic! We need to shed light on fake science and learn the truth about these claims. Do you believe the bumps on your skull determine your personality? No way! But there was a time when we all trusted this idea. It takes critical thinking to uncover the reality of these claims. This is my 30 L&D articles in 30 days challenge! (Link to the article down below)

Article #23: Has eLearning Killed the “Learning Cone”? - By Dan Biewener

How long it took to read? - 6 minutes

Who is it for? - Those who want to know the truth behind information retention and how to incorporate in in their E-Learning.

What I took from this article - We tend to believe things if they're laid out in an organized fashion. It's how our brains work. We like to save time and energy by creating efficient shortcuts, or heuristics. But this is where problems can occur. By looking at the Cone of Learning, it's easy to believe its claims. Nice vibrant colors, an organized shape, and percentages to boot! However, this mental shortcut leads down a false path and it's important to peel back the layers and see if these claims hold weight.

Biewener does this very well in his article where he contrasts the claims of one's senses leading toward retention and instead pushes current data on blended learning and successful E-Learning trends. The author highlights the effectiveness of multimodal principles such as guided activities, feedback, and pacing and the success in their implementation.

As Biewener states: "The time has come to break through the barriers of an unproven but overused paradigm." I for one am excited for data-driven E-Learning to take the driver's seat in today's L&D!
