L&D Article Review #10

Sometimes I run across an article that's a bit outdated. I appreciate the content, but I'm curious if there are modern takes on the subject. Today was one of those times. This is my 30 L&D articles in 30 days challenge! (Link to the article down below).

Article #10: Meet the Modern Learner - By Cristina Brembilla

How long it took to read? - 15 minutes. There are some optional videos to further explain terms that may bump up this time.

Who is it for? - L&Ders who want to understand the distractions learners face and better ways of engagement.

What I took from this article - How many times do you unlock your smartphone every hour (probably 9 or more). How many times do you get distracted on the web while working (most likely 26+ times a day). When these answers display as cold hard numbers it can be eye opening! Bersin by Deloitte’s infographic “Meet the Modern Learner” does a fine job at illustrating this data and pinpointing the 3 issues surrounding learner's attention: impatience, distraction, and a sense of being overwhelmed.

Brembilla's article takes the analysis one step further by offering solutions on how to combat these terrible threes. She focuses on mobile learning to meet the audience where they are, modifies spaced repetition to work alongside microlearning, and encourages gamified challenges for application and engagement. Considering "Meet the Modern Learner" is over 7 years old, I was worried that the data would be obsolete. However, many of these issues continue to persist and it's our job to find realistic solutions that can be integrated seamlessly into our E-Learning. This article helps meet that demand!
