L&D Article Review #19
Who here knows about Jean Piaget and his work in the 1920's on student-centered learning? 🏫 I often taught about his education reform in my Psychology classes where he pioneered concepts such as age specific cognitive development and the importance of discovery learning. I believe his work is complemented by that of Dr. Maria Montessori and the famous "The Montessori Method". But both of these discoveries occurred over a hundred years ago in the early 1900's. So, what about now in 2022? How have we built upon this knowledge? Follow me as I complete my 30 L&D articles in 30 days challenge! (Link to the article down below)
Article #19: WHAT IS ADAPTIVE LEARNING AND HOW DOES IT WORK TO PROMOTE EQUITY IN HIGHER EDUCATION? - By Robert McGuire
How long it took to read? - 10 - 15 minutes
Who is it for? - Anyone who wants to learn what adaptive learning is and where it's heading in education
What I took from this article - As I attempted to make the point with my, not so clear, opening tangent, student-centered and individualized learning has seen many shifts in the past hundred years. Adaptive learning and it's software is the next step in meeting learners where they are and giving them the individualized attention they deserve.
The article briefly mentions that marginalized populations slip through the cracks due to lack of budget or resources and that adaptive technology can help personalize a lesson plan while also not breaking the bank. The second half of this article is essentially an ad for an adaptive learning software... However, I do believe in the concept of AI software tailoring a learning experience for a student and while I believe many of the implementations are at the beginning stages, I'm excited to see where this goes in the future!
