Episode 12 - Dr. Luke Hobson

Listen to the whole episode here:

Dr. Luke Hobson is a Senior Instructional Designer and Program Manager at MIT xPRO, an Instructor for the University of Miami’s School of Education and Human Development, and the Founder of Instructional Design Institute. He’s also the author of the book, What I Wish I Knew Before Becoming an Instructional Designer. It’s safe to say that his life is online learning and he loves sharing his experiences with others to help them learn about instructional design!

Luke’s philosophy on learning comes from MIT, which is mens et manus or mind and hand. He believes in providing practical applications to develop real tangible skills. Luke also holds a superpower in being able to take complex ideas and translate them into simple lessons. That’s why his podcast, blog, YouTube channel, courses, and book have detailed steps to help others create meaningful online learning experiences.

Dr. Luke Hobson tackles the following challenges in this episode:

1) You advocate for researching a Subject Matter Expert (SME), and their work, before meeting with them. How does this help the relationship function and what should you look for while researching?

2) I really appreciated the section of your book where you focus on the importance of public speaking. What advice do you have for someone who struggles with this skill and would like to improve?

3) There’s been a lot of focus on K-12 teachers transitioning into the L&D field. However, I haven’t heard as much about Higher Ed teachers or staff members and what skills they could use to make the shift. If you were beginning to look into a new career, how would you leverage your previous experience in Higher ed to make the transition into an L&D role?

Wanna connect with Luke and see what he’s up to? Here are ways to do that!
