Episode 13 - Kera Nellor

Listen to the episode here:

Kera Nellor is an instructional designer who transitioned from classroom and museum education. For as long as she has been a part of the workforce, Kera has gone out of her way to make sure her peers and partners have the knowledge and skills they need to be successful. With roots in design and experimental art, Kera thoughtfully balances the instructional user experience with visual communication best practices to create well-designed training solutions.

The questions we discuss:

1) Lot’s of industries reach for E-Learning as the standard to meet the needs of their learners (whether this is because of structure or access). How would you explain to a company that E-Learning isn’t always the best option and that Instructor-Led Training (ILT) or Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT) have their merits as well?

2) A company’s introduction to Learning Accessibility may start with discussion on closed captioning and e-readers, however they may not know how to approach it from a “design” perspective. How would you present this to your company so you can work accessibility into the foundation of your project?

3) When someone’s been in a field for a while, it’s common to take shortcuts in a project to save time. However, if problems arise, those shortcuts can end up costing more than they saved (i.e. needing to communicate the design of a project when storyboards are lacking). How would you organize your design so you can keep open communication and trouble shoot, if the time comes?
