Episode 4 - Dr. Heidi Kirby

Listen to the podcast episode here:

Based in Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Heidi Kirby is a customer education manager and Ph.D. graduate in instructional design and technology. She also hosts the BLOC (Building Learning and Organizational Culture) podcast and is co-founder of Useful Stuff, which provides resources for L&D professionals. She got her start as a college professor but has since worked as an instructional designer and L&D manager for NASA and tech companies.

Challenges presented to Heidi:

1) You’re looking for a job but want to make sure the company values L&D. How do you find out what you’re getting yourself into during the interview stage?

2) You’ve been a strong advocate for research-based design and calling out pseudoscience models. Imagine a newer L&D professional seeking information on adult learning models. What advice would you have for them on where they should get their information?

3) Let’s say you were asked to complete a run-of-the-mill compliance training for your employer. They want to check off that box with some PowerPoint slides and call it good. But you know that this product won’t help people learn. What are your steps for bringing up this conversation?
